usually i have dozens among dozens of tabs open. no exaggeration.
some kept open so that i know to get around to it sooner or later, some open just because i wanted them open. keep it going long enough, say a few weeks, and it’s 5 separate windows with 30-40 tabs spread amongst them.
then i got up, laptop accidentally unplugged, turns off, everything lost. google chrome didn’t even catch it, so there’s no getting it back. some tabs i know should’ve been closed anyways, others i really meant to get around to reading or watching. short films, documentaries, articles, interviews, and essays. i do know they’re not lost forever, but it’s gonna be a bitch digging them back up again.
“The spacecraft was a long way from home. I thought it might be a good idea, just after Saturn, to have them take one last glance homeward. From Saturn, the Earth would appear too small for Voyager to make out any detail. Our planet would just be a point of light, a lonely pixel, hardly distinguishable from the many other points of light the Voyager would see, nearby planets and far-off suns. But precisely because of the obscurity of our world thus revealed, such a picture might be worth having.
It had been well understood by the scientists and philosophers of classical antiquity that the Earth was a mere point in a vast, encompassing cosmos, but no one had ever seen it as such. Here was our first chance (and perhaps also our last, for decades to come).
as hinted by the quote i reblogged, the controversy surrounding that girl is getting to be serious business. though to some this is already a dead topic, there’s just a bit of news going around about it. i’m sure too much was uncalled for on both sides, but still. one thing that the article has said is that tumblr’s involvement shows that it might be on it’s way to be another 4chan due to the trolls around here who took part. from what i was able to find, 4chan doesn’t see us as a threat, and i’d rather keep it that way. imo, stop trolling or gtfo.
“Tumblr was originally the good-natured domain of hip New York creatives. It was, on balance, a creative force on the Internet. But the role it played in trolling Jessi Slaughter shows that Tumblr is developing a nasty side as well. Tumblr founder David Karp better get on this before Tumblr becomes 4chan with a slick minimalist interface.”—
so is everything that made fun of kerligirl13 going to jail?
by “everything”, i’m assuming you mean “everyone”. if someone made fun of her, i’m pretty sure they won’t go to jail only because of making fun of her. that’s freedom of speech.
when it comes to kids taking sexual pictures of themselves and sending it over the internet, if you weren’t aware, there’s laws about that. if someone takes a sexualized picture of themselves and put it on the internet, that person can be recognized as creating and distributing child pornography, even if it’s their own picture. any person who receives a copy and sends it to others can be recognized as owning and distributing child pornography. as a result, creator, owner, and distributor alike can all possibly end up in jail or on probation, depending on what exactly is being distributed. in any case, they would all have to join the sex offender registry and be known as such for the rest of their lives. best thing to do when receiving a child porn picture is to delete it and tell authorities.
concerning this girl, i’m not entirely sure if reblogging her images counts as ownership and distributing of photography. if they downloaded it or sent it around via email, possibly. otherwise, idk. but kerligirl13 can definitely get in trouble for that topless picture, though she did cover up a bit with her hand. the bikini picture, i wouldn’t know. some girls ended up in trouble for putting up pictures of themselves in bras on the internet, so i don’t know how exactly it can turn out for her, so i’m not sure how it could turn out for everyone else.
if anyone’s wondering why i know this stuff, i had to do research for a speech in english class during school.
so this jessi slaughter girl who's getting popular around tumblr...
something is seriously wrong. i will try to avoid saying anything bad about her parents, but as far as it goes for them, they made some serious mistakes. i’m sure they’re aware of that. this girl made some terrible choices. there’s probably people who set terrible examples. there’s no central blame for all this, but still, there she is.
i didn’t watch the videos in full, particularly because i was facepalming too much, but it’s clear that something in her social environment allowed her to be exposed to all of whatever this is. she amassed all of these cultural assumptions, which in her head probably looked like the right way to go, leading her to become the ignorant little girl she’s mocked as today. she’s terribly misguided, and people were jumping into the fray. while i don’t know what her logic is, she got a tumblr because of the popularity she experienced, which she thinks is a good thing(note: it’s not). as far as i can see it, neither side is justified. the morality of boths sides isn’t clear, with no black or white, only grey.
when you look at it as a whole, it’s just a bit frightening, this whole internet thing. in the few and luckily rare situations like these, decency and dignity have pretty much left. hopefully the same isn’t true for humanity itself. sorry about this ramble here.
“How often people speak of art and science as though they were two entirely different things, with no interconnection. An artist is emotional, they think, and uses only his intuition; he sees all at once and has no need of reason. A scientist is cold, they think, and uses only his reason; he argues carefully step by step, and needs no imagination. That is all wrong. The true artist is quite rational as well as imaginative and knows what he is doing; if he does not, his art suffers. The true scientist is quite imaginative as well as rational, and sometimes leaps to solutions where reason can follow only slowly; if he does not, his science suffers.”—The Roving Mind (1983) Isaac Asimov
one story i’ve heard go around on tumblr, though uncredited, was andy weir’s the egg, making its rounds as a screenshot of a series of posts on 4chan. while it was a work of fiction, it very likely gave many of it’s readers chills, and probably a moment or two to think of every person’s probable place and purpose pertaining to the planets surrounding us. next to that little bit of alliteration i just did right there, i thought that this story i just linked here would be another interesting story to consider concerning the cosmos. dammit. i’m trying to resist alliterating. anyway, this story was too long to squeeze into an image, but if you have enough time or consideration, i’d say give this one a shot.
